Prolotherapy and PRP has as its current primary applications in the treatment of:

  • Unstable joints (shoulders, lower back, etc.)

  • Painful joints (knees, back, etc)

  • Areas of pain/tension around the body

  • Nerve pain

Prolotherapy is a precise injection of a mild irritating solution is placed directly into the site of the torn or stretched tendon or ligament. This produces a mild, controlled inflammation that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Fibroblasts are stimulated to lay down new tissue on the weakened area. This encourages growth of new ligament or tendon fibres, resulting in a tightening of the weakened structure.

The first injection starts the process and additional treatments allow a gradual buildup of tissue to restore the original strength to the area.

PRP or platelet rich plasma is the injection of plasma taking directly from one’s blood (a blood sample from the patient is drawn at the office and then spun in a centrifuge in order to isolate plasma), which stimulates the repair of ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joint spaces. PRP is specifically helpful for arthritis and the pain as well as instability associated with arthritis.

Both treatments many applications and discussing your concerns with Dr. Della is the best way to determine if Prolo or PRP is right for you.
